Concentrations
Concentrations are in-person classes that take a deep dive into one of our course topics: Architecture & the Environment and Design for Future Cities. In the morning class, led by the seminar instructor, you’ll hear from experts in the field, and engage in a focused design project that you’ll start to develop in afternoon studio. Day 1 introduces you to concepts and practices, Days 2 - 7 continue this work, and Day 8 is all-day studio, in which you’ll finish and present your project to guest critics. Some key activities include:
In-person site visits at ONE Lab’s home, the Brooklyn Navy Yard, as well as other NYC-based locales
Writing a short essay on your project, grounded in history and current events, that offers a vision of the future for the issue you’re studying. You’ll submit this with your portfolio on the final day of class
You’ll receive a student evaluation from your instructors that gives feedback on your project and essay, as well as your overall performance in the class; it can be used as supporting material for an application to advanced design programs and college
Discoveries
Please note: At present, there are no plans to offer the remote Discovery course, Urbaneering and Green Design.
Discoveries are a chance to investigate three related topics. This format allows you to consider which field you might want to pursue further, and it allows you to delve further into the idea of interdisciplinary work. As part of an online class:
You’ll visit sites and learn from innovators and designers around the world
You’ll create a series of prototypes through drawings and models, and develop your ideas in a short essay
Day 1 introduces you to concepts and practices, followed by 3 two-day module addressing each of the course topics, i.e. Architecture & the Environment and Design for Future Cities. Day 8 is all-day studio and presentation work for instructors and guests. Your student evaluation gives feedback on your project, essay and your overall performance in the class; it can be used as supporting material for an application to advanced design programs and even college. All Discovery classes are the same format and cover the same topics, but with different guests and tours each session.
