Courses focusing on the future of architecture and urban design help students develop skills to think creatively, effectively design projects and get hands-on experience with living materials.

You will prepare for college, your career, and beyond. Students join us for two weeks of exploration, connection, and insight which they use to cultivate a final portfolio of two to three industry-panel reviewed designs.

With us you’ll learn:

  • Introduction to important trends in present-day green architecture and urban design, with reference to pertinent historical and theoretical contexts

  • Research and concept development

  • Sketch and form drawing

  • Molding and casting

  • Cultivating living materials such as mycelium and wheatgrass

  • Presentation and public speaking

You will leave with

  • An understanding of experimentation and ideation from engagement in the prototyping process

  • Dynamic thinking about materials, both living and found

  • Exposure to design and entrepreneurial innovation from guest speaker case studies

  • Learn about the design process in action from site visits to relevant designer and fabricator spaces

  • A community of like-minded peers and inspiring mentors

Architecture and the Environment

Positing cities and other environments as virtual laboratories, student projects in this class are based on the hypothesis that, in the future, buildings will come to be self-sufficient in their critical necessities.

Students will:

  • Be in dialogue with architects, educators, designers and inventors, as they explore how architecture is adapting to address current environmental changes and challenges

  • Explore new, exciting work through guest lectures, site visits, and discussion

  • Work with living materials in the Terreform ONE studio to conceive of and fabricate iterative prototypes of built environments

  • Present their model as well as a small portfolio charting the journey from idea to actualization

Design for Future Cities

Our cities have always existed in an interplay of industries, communities, and innovation and urban designers helm this work. However, as we approach the climate crisis, it is more important than ever to invest in the synergies among design ideas, tech innovations, and community engagement to engender, develop, and sustain environmentally-resilient cities and an urban design profession that leverages multidisciplinary thinking.

Students will:

  • Be in dialogue with urban designers, educators, designers and inventors, as they explore how cities are adapting to the climate crisis

  • Explore new, exciting work through guest lectures, site visits, and discussion

  • Work with living materials in the Terreform ONE studio to develop prototypes of master city plans

  • Present their model as well as a portfolio charting the journey from idea to actualization

Thank you so much for making such an amazing and cool class possible! You all brought energy and wisdom to each class, and the speakers you brought in were super interesting and impressive. I’m sad it’s over, but I’m excited to continue my work with Mycelium and explore new materials and ideas. It was a really incredible class.
