Frequently Asked Questions

  • Visit onelab.org to learn about our two deep-dive in-person Concentration courses (Architecture & the Environment and Design for Future Cities). Then write your 200-250 word essay in response to our application prompt at www.onelab.org/apply, making sure you compose it elsewhere & paste into the application, as the form will not save any draft!

  • Each day starts with morning seminar, which consists of faculty lectures, class discussions and brainstorming, meetings with guest lecturers, and virtual and live field trips. The morning’s work sets the stage for hands-on learning, design thinking, and physical design projects, all of which are key to the program, and the focus of afternoon studio time. During studio, students work independently while TAs support and guide their work (sometimes convening group discussions, sometimes holding 1:1 conversations). All students have a journal in which they record daily activities, exercises, observations, and thoughts. They document their work process through sketches and photographs, and begin to build a portfolio and to craft an essay examining the design process, along with their own critical understanding of it.

  • Session 1 and Session 2 meet Monday – Thursday from 10.00am – 3pm, with a lunch break from 12.30pm – 1.00 pm ET. There are breaks in both the morning and afternoon modules; the timing for those will depend on the activities planned for each particular day. In-person students can either bring their lunch or avail themselves of several nearby dining options, though they cannot travel off the Yard by themselves without express permission from their families.

  • To make the experience effective and provide individualized one-on-one instruction and feedback, class size will range from 10 to 15 students. Classes will generally be held at the Brooklyn STEAM Center, with visits to Newlab and other Brooklyn Navy Yard sites (schedule changes depending on which session).

  • Every student will receive our bespoke Studio in a Box (SBX), a materials supply kit on the first day of class. It will contain all the materials necessary for the afternoon studio class.

  • Prior to the final day’s studio critiques (“crits”), students share their work over the course of the session. Students sharing work is vital to the sense of community, growth and education: they not only receive feedback on their own project, they also see their classmates’ work and share their own with their peers. On the last day, students receive feedback on their projects and their portfolios from faculty and special guest professional critics. It is all based on positive feedback, a bit of constructive criticism, and the desire to help students grow in their craft and understanding.

  • Yes! Over the course of the program, you will have taken your journal entries and crafted a brief essay that applies your critical thinking skills to an examination of the work you did to bring a work from conception to execution. In turn, the faculty prepare a detailed evaluation of your work (they take notes throughout the program) and produce a final version that may serve as a recommendation for your college application portfolio (or anything else for which you may need a reference).

  • Please note that the curriculum for both Session 1 and Session 2 have a shared context and introduction, but may vary in instructor area of expertise and/or in student focus and/or in guests and visits. That is, a student may focus on Architecture & the Environment in S1 and Design for Future Cities in S2 (or vice versa), with appropriate subject-specific research and design work, or alternatively, a student may choose to continue in S2 with design and portfolio work started in S1. However, we want to confirm that there will be some content that is similar to both sessions; if a student chooses to register for both sessions, we will do our best to give an individualized experience but the student should recognize this context. If a student registers for more than one class, an automatic 10% discount is applied to both sessions.

  • Yes! If you register with a friend or family member, or refer someone to us for any other session who also confirms registration, both students will receive a 10% discount on their course.

  • In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, ONE Lab monitors and updates its policies in accordance with public health measures and requirements to ensure the safety of all community members. Please visit the COVID 19 Guidelines Page to read more about our COVID 19 policies.

  • Terreform ONE is committed to making its programs accessible to students from all backgrounds. Our scholarship program aims to improve availability, access, and equity of learning opportunities for economically disadvantaged students by offering scholarships. Please contact info@onelab.org for more information, with the subject line “Scholarship Applicant.” Because we have already partnered with a number of community organizations, we have limited seats to offer as full scholarship funds, so please be mindful of this when asking for aid.
