Faculty
James Patten, PhD
Patten Studio
James Patten is an interaction designer, inventor and visual artist whose work lies at the intersection of the physical and digital worlds. He is the founder of Patten Studios, which takes an interdisciplinary approach to the creation of new interactive experiences and digital interfacing, combining skill in interaction design and graphic design with expertise in software and electrical engineering. Patten began studying virtual environments at the University of Virginia, and developed new interfaces for visualizing time-varying volumetric data at NASA Langley Research Center. He then earned his doctorate at the MIT Media Lab, where he developed a series of interactive tables for a diverse set of applications. Patten is a TED fellow and has exhibited or performed in venues such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Transmediale festival in Berlin, the Museo Guggenheim Bilbao, the Museo d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona, and Instituto Tomie Othake in Sao Paulo. His work has been recognized in several international design competitions including the International Design Magazine's Annual Design Review, and the Industrial Design Excellence Awards.  Patten holds an AAS in Drafting from Southern Technical College and a PhD from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
